Michael Galeota, the former Disney Channel child star of "The Jersey," died over the weekend at his home in suburban Los Angeles. He was 31.
Galeota was found dead when police arrived at his home around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times
. LA County coroner Lt. Fred Corral told the newspaper that Galeota had a history of medical issues, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and abdominal pains in the past.
TMZ reported that Galeota went to the hospital
last week suffering from abdominal pains, but allegedly checked out on Wednesday against his doctor's advice. A friend reportedly found Galeota lying on the floor in his living room Sunday after climbing through a window when the actor did not answer the door.
The former child star also suffered from diverticulitis, an inflammation of the digestive tract, but a source told the celebrity news website that he was not following medical advice.
A GoFundMe.com page set up for Galeota's funeral
expenses put up Monday has raised more than $17,500 as of Tuesday.
"His humble nature hid a great compassionate and loving human being, with a huge heart," a statement on the fundraising page said. "He cared profoundly for his family and friends. Mike was a great giver, always ready and able to care for others."
"Although his life was short, we are grateful and appreciate the experience of having been loved, and loved him in return, and for being in our lives. In our hearts and souls, he will always be with us," the statement continued.
Galeota played Nick Lighter in the Disney Channel series "The Jersey" from 1999 to 2004. He also appeared on episodes of the television series "The Nightmare Room," "Ally McBeal," "Profiler," and "ER."
