A Mexico prison riot possibly sparked by members of rival drug cartels resulted in the deaths of 52 people Thursday. Another 12 people were injured.

The riot at the Topo Chico prison in Monterrey comes days before Pope Francis is scheduled to visit another prison in northern Mexico, The Guardian pointed out.

"During the clash several prisoners set fire to the food storage and sleeping areas," Jaime Rodriguez, governor of Nuevo Leon — the state where the Topo Chico prison is located — told The Guardian. Rodriguez said it was not clear how exactly the victims died.

CNN reported that the riot began around 1 a.m. EST Thursday with authorities getting control of the prison again around 2:30 a.m. As news spread of the riot, relatives of the inmates arrived at the prison demanding answers about those killed and injured.

"There is a riot, they want to kill us all, come ask for me," one woman said her son told her, according to CNN.

Rodriguez told The Guardian that authorities believe that Juan Pedro Saldivar-Farias, the leader of the Zetas cartel, was involved in the disturbance. Local Mexican media also identified Jorge Iván Hernández, "El Credo," a leader of the Gulf Cartel, as another possible participant, the U.K. newspaper said.

Authorities suspected Saldivar-Farias in the 2010 jet skiing death of American David Hartley on Falcon Lake along the Texas-Mexico border.

The state of Mexican prisons has been in the spotlight since the high-profile escape of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman last summer from what was billed as one of the country's best maximum-security prisons in Altiplano.

In that incident, Guzman escaped from the prison via a mile-long tunnel that was dug underneath his cell.
