#MeToo is for every woman who has ever been sexually harassed, Alyssa Milano said as she launched a new social media campaign calling upon women who have endured sexual assaults and harassment to speak up on Twitter.

“If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet,” the “Charmed” actress posted to Twitter on Sunday.

The Wrap said it wasn’t long before responses began to pour in, causing #MeToo to trend.

“When I was in the military, my date wanted sex. I said no. He ripped my shirt. I jumped out of the car. I was lucky,” one reply wrote.

“As a sixth grader, a group of boys held me against a wall as they pulled up my shirt to see if I stuffed my bra with Charmin or Bounty,” another woman posted.

Milano’s tweet, which arose from an idea of a friend who thought it would be an effective way to shed light on sexual harassment and assault, also drew responses from several celebrities including Anna Paquin, Lady Gaga and Gabrielle Union, Elle noted.

The Harvey Weinstein scandal has seen more than two dozen women come forward with allegations of sexual harassment and assault against the Hollywood movie mogul.

In a statement on her website, Milano commented on the situation.

“I've been asked a number of times to comment on the Harvey Weinstein scandal,” she wrote.

“While I am sickened and angered over the disturbing accusations of Weinstein's sexual predation and abuse of power, I'm happy – ecstatic even – that it has opened up a dialogue around the continued sexual harassment, objectification and degradation of women.”

She added that, “to the women who have suffered any form of abuse of power, I stand beside you. To the women who have come forward against a system that is designed to keep you silent, I stand in awe of you and appreciate you and your fortitude.”
