64-Year-Old Man Arrested After Meth Lab Found in Senior Community

A 64-year-old California man has been arrested for allegedly cooking meth in the senior retirement village where he lives.

Fresno police arrested Robert Short after a traffic stop in which they reportedly discovered $1,700 worth of methamphetamines in his car, along with scales and baggies, ABC 30 reported. When police went to Short’s home at the California League-Fresno Village retirement complex, they found indications he was manufacturing the drug, they said.

"Just shocking someone that age would do that, but actually a perfect place to do it, right? Retirement village, who would suspect it going on there?" Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez told ABC 30.

Police say the street value of the meth Short was carrying is close to $1,700.

ABC 30 described Short’s neighbors as “appalled” that someone in their retirement village would be selling drugs and indicated Short had only lived there about three or four months.

"It's shocking, I would never guess that anything like that would go on at a senior citizen village," Robin Schramek told ABC 30.

Despite the seriousness of the situation and the fact that manufacturing meth can cause dangerous situations and explosions, many online couldn’t help making the comparison to the TV drama “Breaking Bad.”

Others just expressed their surprise at the accused’s age.

Another concern as this case moves forward: places where meth is cooked can become toxic environments, poisoning buildings and requiring remediation.

“Unbeknownst to future occupants, they may be moving into a deadly environment that can only be rectified with costly remediation,” Sourceable said. “Insurers are reporting an increase in claims for toxic buildings. Given the vast web of those affected, this is not surprising.”
