A meth drone carrying over 6 pounds of the illicit drug crashed in Mexico near the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Tuesday night.
According to NBC San Diego, the drone was reported to authorities by a citizen who wished to remain anonymous after he or she found it in the parking lot of a Tijuana supermarket in the Zona Rio neighborhood.
Police reported to the scene, and found six packages of meth bound to the six-propeller aircraft with plastic webbing and strips of black tape. Officials soon released photos of the incident via Facebook.
The Los Angeles Times reported that police later identified the drone as a Spreading Wings S900 model.
The Tijuana Public Safety Secretariat and U.S. border patrol agents said this was not the first time they've seen drug smugglers employ drones.
Drones, catapults, potato launchers, tunnels, and unwitting travelers used as "blind mules" are common methods of attempting to get illegal drugs over the border.
