Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers around the country are celebrating the restaurant chain's 40th anniversary with a special "Way Back Wednesday" promotion featuring prices when the chain was founded in 1974.
"Cokes will be 30 cents; Michelob, Budweiser and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer 75 cents; and a small cheese pizza will set you back a whopping $2.50,"
wrote The Birmingham News.
The markdowns reflect 1974 pricing, when three college students founded the first Mellow Mushroom on Spring Street in Atlanta. Four decades later, it boasts 170 locations in 18 states.

In addition to the time-traveling promotion, the restaurant is also giving away a trip for two to Amsterdam. Contestants can enter by taking a picture in front of a cutout of the original Mellow Mushroom at participating locations, and posting it to Instagram with the hashtag #40YearsBaked.
"We're getting tons of interest, pretty much everywhere," Tammy Lucich, promotions and events manager,
told AL.com. "Who doesn't love customer appreciation?"
Differentiating it from larger pizza chains,
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that, "Unlike the Chicago and Detroit-style thick crust pies, or the thin-crust Neapolitan, [Mellow Mushroom's] Southern style crust is hand-tossed (not stretched thin), stone baked and dusted with cornmeal instead of flour."
