Melania Trump was unable to leave her hotel to attend G-20 events for spouses of world leaders Friday because of ongoing protests in the area of the hotel.
A spokesperson for the first lady told the press in Hamburg that police could not clear Trump to leave her residence because of safety concerns, CNN reported. The spouses of G-20 leaders were supposed to tour a climate change center and take a river cruise today while their spouses attended meetings.
Melania Trump traveled to Hamburg on Thursday with her husband for the summit, which started Friday morning. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, and others to discuss policies and agreements between the countries.
Twelve thousand protesters started fires and surged into public areas near the summit location for the second day as police tried to disperse them with tear gas and water cannons, which also were used to put out the fires, the New York Daily News reported.
Protesters also blocked roads, which restricted Melania Trump’s travel abilities, the Daily News said. She was able to leave the residence later in the day, however, as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters she was sent in to break up a meeting that had lasted for an hour.
It didn’t work, however; the meeting lasted more than two hours, according to the Daily News.
The first lady tweeted that she hoped everyone would stay safe and that she was thinking of those who were hurt in the protests.
Others joined in with their thoughts about the protests.
