Actor Mel Gibson and director Farhad Safinia are being sued for allegedly “hijacking” and “derailing” a film about the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary, according to a recent story published in the Hollywood Reporter.

Gibson and Safinia have been battling Voltage Pictures in court since July over the production of “The Professor and the Madman,” a film described by Gibson as a “labor of love.”

Gibson sued the production company first in Los Angeles County Superior Court for failing to honor the co-production deal and allegedly engaging in fraudulent behavior. Voltage, Gibson claimed in the lawsuit, failed to provide a budget, shoot “critical” scenes in Oxford, execute Safinia’s directing deal and secure a completion bond. The film was slated for release this year.

Safinia sued Voltage for defamation in September after Voltage told the Los Angeles Times that “Gibson and the film’s director consistently failed to live up to their professional and contractual responsibilities to Voltage."

Voltage responded last Wednesday in California federal court with a lawsuit of its own, claiming Gibson, Safinia and Gibson’s producing partner Bruce Davey, “unlawfully” hijacked control of “and/or” interfered with the company’s ability to “exploit the rights to distribute the motion picture.”

Voltage in the suit also says Safinia had no legal authority to register the screenplay with the U.S. Copyright Office and claim sole ownership of it because he entered into an agreement with Voltage for his writing services.
