Mel Brooks Pulls Six-Finger Prank at Chinese Theatre Cement Ceremony

Mel Brooks had an interesting addition to his handprints at his TCL Chinese Theatre cement ceremony this week: a sixth finger.

The 88-year-old joined the ranks of fellow legendary actors like Jack Nicholson, Frank Sinatra, Sidney Poitier, and Julie Andrews, who all have their hand and footprints outside the iconic Los Angeles venue. But, in true Brooks fashion, he decided to put a spin on the Monday ceremony by adding a prosthetic pinkie to generate the extra finger, USA Today reported.

"I wanted to do something just a little different," Brooks later told Conan O'Brien. "So, I got another finger."

Sky News noted that the funny prank loosened up the crowd at the usually subdued ceremony.

"I decided to pep it up a little bit, do something different in the forecourt, here in the cement, so I put an extra finger on my left hand, just in case somebody from Des Moines, Iowa, says 'Harry, Harry, look, Mel Brooks had six fingers on his left hand,"' Brooks said.

Brooks won the Academy Award for best screenplay in 1969 for "The Producers" and was nominated for a second screenplay Oscar in 1975 with Gene Wilder for "Young Frankenstein." But he's probably most well known for the controversial 1974 comedy "Blazing Saddles," which parodied race and homosexuality.

"When you start unwrapping Brooks' career, you have to start with 'Blazing Saddles,'" USA Today's Mike Foss wrote. "Sure, he had films before and after, but it’s his western spoof starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder that will be remembered as his masterpiece."

Brooks reportedly took a moment during his cement ceremony to remember comedian Joan Rivers, whose funeral was held over the weekend. He called her "the bravest comic that ever lived."

"I mean, she was like an explorer," he said. "She went into areas of dangerous comedy that nobody would dare to tread on, and she was in person, privately, the sweetest, nicest person you'd ever want to meet in your life."
