A medic born in an ambulance 42 years ago Monday returned the favor and helped deliver a baby girl in his emergency vehicle before reaching Prince George's Hospital Center in Maryland, according to The Washington Post.

Daniel Helsel, of the Prince George's Fire Department, told the Post that he chalked the experience up to fate since he had never worked on his birthday during his 17 years with the department until Monday.

When firefighters loaded the pregnant woman into the ambulance, she began to give birth, the newspaper said.

"As soon as she got in the ambulance, the baby’s head" appeared, Helsel told the Post. "Everything was good with the delivery, albeit in the back of an ambulance."

Helsel told the newspaper that he was born on Interstate 495 Beltway when his mother was on her way to Holy Cross Hospital from Landover Hills in 1975.

"We were just trying to get her to the hospital," Helsel told the Post about helping the woman Monday at 12:17 a.m. "We got in the back of the unit; I happened to be at the foot of the stretcher."

He said the baby came quickly, crying and breathing, delivering at 12:38 a.m., the Post said.

"We placed the baby on mom's chest and continued bouncing down the road to the hospital," Helsel told the Post.

The birth brought back memories for Helsel's parents, Jesse and Nancy, according to WTTG-TV.

"We get on the Beltway and he says you are going to have to pull over because the baby is going to come," Jesse Helsel told the television station. "As soon as that ambulance comes to a stop – I don't even think it was fully stopped – the side door opens.

"A state trooper – our son's guardian angel – comes in. He doesn't say a word. He assists with the birth and then he leaves," Jesse Helsel continued.

Nancy Helsel told WTTG-TV that everything with Daniel Helsel, like Monday's birthday happened quickly.

"I only had five contractions," Nancy Helsel told the television station. "In 15 minutes, he was born."
