A Medford bone marrow donor finally met his recipient on Friday afternoon, 18 months after saving his life.

Jack Eppley has been living cancer free for more than a year thanks to Mike Reilly of Massachusetts who, after being listed on the bone marrow donation registry for 19 years, finally got the chance to make a difference in someone’s life, the Boston Globe reported.

Eppley, who was 12 at the time, was suffering from blood cancer and desperately needed help.

He had already endured one failed marrow transplant when a national marrow donor program paired him up with Reilly, who agreed to donate peripheral blood stem cells to the boy.

Recalling the day he learned about Eppley’s condition, Reilly said via Inside Edition that he had forgotten about the registry until a letter arrived informing him that he was a match for an 11-year-old boy, asking whether he would go forward with the procedure.

“The letter was the heaviest piece of paper I’ve ever held in my life because in that one sheet of paper was Jack’s life,” he said. “I am a father of two and I had to say yes.”

Marrow was extracted from Reilly on June 8, 2016, and a day later Eppley received the stem cell infusion, which was a success.

Current policy prohibits donors from meeting the recipients for at least a year after the donation so it was only recently that the families got talking and decided they wanted to meet up.

That finally happened last week, outside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Copley Square in Boston.

“It was pretty awesome,” Eppley said of their meeting, per the Globe. “I’ve been wanting to meet him for a really long time. He saved my life, so this is a pretty awesome experience.”

Reilly, who managed to get a friend to roll out a red carpet when the family pulled up at the hotel, said he saw Eppley as one of his family members.

“I'm happy to meet the kid," Reilly said, per WCVB. "He has the same cells my two kids have. He's part of the family."
