McDonald’s Happy Meals will no longer offer cheeseburgers or chocolate milk as standard options, although customers can still get the items by special request.

Forbes reported that the fast-food giant is working toward the goal of Happy Meals under 600 calories, with reduced sugar, salt, and saturated fat so that children who frequently eat the fast-food meals can be healthier. Hamburgers without cheese will still be available on the standard Happy Meal menu.

While 2022 is the target date for the reductions, McDonald’s said its U.S. stores will meet the criteria by June, Forbes reported. Happy Meals have already introduced apple slices, lower-sugar juice boxes and reduced-size french fries to make the meals healthier. A cheeseburger has about 300 calories, Forbes reported.

The chain has served Happy Meals since 1979, and the meals account for 15 percent of its total sales, Forbes reported. Other changes being made are offering books in addition to toys at more locations and offering bottled water as a drink.

According to CNN Money, the American Heart Association reported that 40 percent of young children eat fast food daily.

“Kids do crave McDonald’s, but parents might not always feel good about bringing them there,” St. Joseph’s University food marketing professor Ernest Baskin said, CNN reported. “By positioning their meals as healthier, McDonald’s is likely attempting to make the decision easier for the parents.”

Although chocolate milk will not be on the menu in June, it is a temporary deletion while the drink is reformulated to have fewer added sugars, Forbes reported.

Twitter did not seem thrilled by the change.
