Maurice Adams Jr., an 8-year-old boy, became an internet sensation after helping an elderly woman climb a flight of stairs in Milledgeville, Georgia, in an act of kindness that was caught on video.

The video, posted on Facebook by Riley Duncan on Tuesday, has been shared more than 22,000 on the social media website with more than 4,100 likes.

The boy, who did not know he was being filmed, could be seen putting his hand on the woman's back and helping her balance her walker as he assisted her up the outdoor stairs, People magazine reported.

"Thank God for our youth," Duncan said in the video's caption, that ended with Maurice and the woman hugging and her walking away.

Contricia Hill, Maurice's mother, told WSB-TV that she and her son saw the woman crossing a nearby busy street while in a car after leaving a high school graduation when the woman approached the stairs.

"He asked, 'Can I go out there and help her up the steps?'" Hill told WSB-TV. Hill said she did not know anyone would film and post her son's act of kindness on social media, but added that reaction has made her feel proud.

"It's touching. It's very touching," Hill told the television station. "(It just shows) respect and raising your kids right goes a long way."

Hill said she did not know the woman, whom she said told her son that he was "special," WSB-TV wrote.

Duncan told CBS News that he wanted to meet Maurice and give him $100 for his act.

The boy won many of fans on Twitter.
