Matt Campbell, a United Kingdom masterchef, died Sunday after collapsing during the London Marathon. A regular runner, he had finished a similar race earlier in the month.

Campbell, 29, who was running in his first London endurance race for the Brathay Trust charity, had run under three hours in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon earlier in April, The Guardian reported. The cause of death had not been announced.

Race director Hugh Brasher said that Campbell, who was running the race for his father who died 18 months ago, had finished most of the course when he collapsed, per The Guardian.

"In historical terms, I believe in 38 editions of the event we have had over one million finishers and sadly there have been 14 deaths," Brasher told The Guardian. "It is unusual and it is always tragic when it happens. There will be an autopsy so we can't – and we shouldn't – speculate about what should happen next.”

"All we should say is that our thoughts are with Matt's family and friends. He was a good runner. He had run sub-three hours at the Manchester marathon, but he collapsed around the 22.5 mile mark. He did receive immediate medical attention but unfortunately he did pass away and our thoughts do go to his family and friends at this sad time."

Campbell appeared on the BBC's "MasterChef: The Professionals" in December 2017. He finished second on the BBC "Young Chef of the Year" show when he was just 20 in 2009, the BBC News reported.

The Guardian said Campbell spent eight years traveling the world and became a private chef working for VIPs. According to his website, Campbell has backpacked around Peru and created pop-up restaurants in Belize to pay for his accommodation.

"I'm proud I didn't take the traditional route that my career hinted towards in the beginning," Campbell wrote, per The Guardian.

Campbell's public relations consultant Helen Hokin called the chef a "lovely, kind-hearted and down-to-earth" man, according to the BBC News.

"I believe he was poised to become the next great innovator in British food," Hokin told the broadcaster. "He was in the middle of a roadshow tour and he had such a way with inspiring young chefs. This is so sad."

A spokeswoman from MasterChef also issued a statement, per the BBC News.

"We are shocked and saddened to hear the news about Matt Campbell, one of our talented contestants from last year," the spokeswoman told the broadcaster. "It was a privilege to have him on the show. He will always be remembered for producing some of the most innovative and groundbreaking food that we saw on the series.

"From the whole MasterChef team, our sincere condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends," the spokeswoman added.

Other notables and fans added their condolences on social media.
