Massachusetts Beach Brawl: Handful Arrested in Mother's Day Melee

A Massachusetts beach brawl broke out on Mother's Day involving about 100 people and leading to several arrests.

The fight on Revere Beach, located four miles from downtown Boston, occurred around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, but there are conflicting reports as to how it started. According to NECN, Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo said the melee began when two girls started fighting each other. A larger group then got involved when the girls' boyfriends and their friends joined in, Rizzo said.

But witnesses told WFXT-TV that the fight started when police officers tried to confiscate a backpack reported to contain drugs from a group of young people. State police, though, said the ruckus started with a group of people who were drinking and possibly smoking marijuana on the beach near other families.

State police added that a person reportedly jumped on a trooper's back when things became unruly, but declined to call the incident a brawl, WFXT-TV noted.

Five females and four males were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for throwing bottles and rocks during the incident, NECN reported. The suspects are scheduled to appear in Chelsea District Court on Monday.

"It's very busy down there because of the weather, and then one thing happens, and no one wants to leave," Revere Police Sgt. Charlie Ovino relayed to Boston.com. "It was extremely bad. We sent our prisoner wagon and it couldn't even make it through."

Ovino said that all on-call officers in Revere and East Boston came to the beach in an effort to restore order, which was made more difficult by the 300 to 400 people milling around observing the huge fight.

Police officers from Lynn, Chelsea, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit, Boston, Winthrop, and Everett arrived on the scene to assist Revere and East Boston authorities, Ovino told Boston.com.

Revere Beach has been the site of three other fights in the past several weeks where authorities had to be called in to restore peace, WFXT-TV reported. Some officials told the television station that they were worried about the escalation of violence with the approaching summer season.
