Mars Mystery Light Spotted in NASA Photos Rouses UFO Crowd

By    |   Tuesday, 08 April 2014 09:33 AM EDT

NASA photos from Mars showing what looks like a beacon flashing from a distance may be a photographic glitch but it has sparked rumors among the UFO crowd.

The NASA photos were taken by the Mars Curiosity rover on April 3 from its right-hand navigation camera, according to NBC News. A bright speck of light appears to pop up right at the rim of a rise.

The photo was beamed from the rover back to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., last week, according to the Houston Chronicle.

A picture taken by the rover's right navigation camera on the day before shows a light from what seemed to be a slightly different perspective, reported NBC News. The navigation camera is a stereo system, and the left-hand navigation camera doesn't show the spots on either day.

NBC News speculated that the information suggests that the light might be a bit of lost data that left blank spots only on the right-hand camera pictures.

That hasn't kept some from various UFO-theme websites from coming up with their own conclusions.

"This could indicate there is intelligent life below the ground and uses light as we do," wrote UFO Sightings Daily after posting the NASA photo. "This is not a glare from the sun, nor is it an artifact of the photo process. Look closely at the bottom of the light. It has a very flat surface giving us 100 (percent indication) it is from the surface. Sure NASA could go and investigate it, but hey, they are not on Mars to discovery life, but there to stall its discovery."

"This one is a mystery to me so please let me know what you think," said a post on Disclose.TV about the photo. "I see what I see. You see what you see?"

NBC News' Alan Boyle said there is a great interest in NASA's photos from Mars and experts are going over every detail.

"And it suggests that people are looking at the pictures from Curiosity very, very closely," said Boyle. "If there's a message from Mars flashing in any photos, you can bet somebody's going to see it."
