On Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed claims that "fake news" stories on the social media platform were responsible for electing Donald Trump, calling the idea "crazy."

“Personally, I think the idea that fake news on Facebook — of which it’s a small amount of content — influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea,” Zuckerberg said in a speech at the Techonomy conference, CNN reported.

He also called into question the nature of those who are looking to blame Facebook for the election result, saying, “I do think there is a profound lack of empathy in asserting that the only reason someone could’ve voted the way they did is fake news.”

The criticism of Facebook came about after a recent Pew study showed 20 percent of users said they have “modified their stance on a social or political issue because of material they saw on social media,” CNN reported. The Pew study did not determine whether those who did so also voted, however.

Zuckerberg said the public underestimated support for Donald Trump.

“If you believe that [fake news stories got Trump elected], then I don’t think you have internalized the message the Trump supporters are trying to send in this election,” Zuckerberg said, USA Today reported.

Other pundits and social media experts such as Fortune’s Kia Kokalitcheva said that while Facebook may not have changed a significant amount of votes, it does at times have the effect of confirming what people already believe about a subject.

Facebook has almost 2 billion active users, and its complex algorithms have been criticized often for controlling what people see in their news feed.
