Mark E. Smith, the frontman of the Manchester post-punk band the Fall, died on Wednesday at the age of 60.

Although no cause of death has been released, Variety reported that Smith had been plagued by health issues “connected to his throat mouth/dental and respiratory system,” the band’s manager, Pam Vander said.

Smith, who had fronted the Fall for four decades, performed in a wheelchair in the U.K. last year and was forced to cancel a U.S. tour due to his health.

Vander confirmed the prolific frontman’s death on Wednesday.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith,” Vander said in a statement, according to Rolling Stone.

“He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam and Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”

Born in Manchester, England, on March 5 1957, Smith grew up listening mostly to 60s garage rock, which impacted his musical style, so when he later went on to audition for several heavy metal groups, he was consistently rejected, All Music noted.

At the time he was working as an office clerk and then later as dock worker when finally founding the Fall in 1976 in Prestwich.

While Smith was often described as a musical and lyrical visionary, he was also notorious for having tumultuous relationships with his band members, having gone through more than 60 musicians over the years who he regularly fired, The Guardian noted.

The band did not enjoy commercial success, however it cultivated an almost cult-like status in the underground music scene, touring extensively between 32 album releases.

Most recently, the Fall dropped the album “New Facts Emerge,” which climbed to Number 35 on the British charts, although it had little impact in the U.S., Rolling Stone said.
