Scottish cyclist Mark Beaumont broke the record Monday for cycling around the world, completing the 18,000-mile route in only 78 days, 14 hours, and 40 minutes.

The previous record was 123 days. The 34-year-old had previously set a new world record of 194 days in 2008.

Beaumont had to average 240 miles a day to break the record. He was shooting for 80 days, inspired by Jules Verne’s book “Around the World in 80 Days,” the BBC reported.

He spent more than 16 hours a day on his bicycle and only slept five hours a night to complete the journey.

Beaumont also broke the record for most miles cycled in a month with 7,031 miles cycled in the first month of his circumnavigation.

Beaumont said it was “the longest two-and-a-half months of my life,” Cycling Weekly reported.

“To get back here in 78 days and change is an absolute dream come true,” Beaumont adde. “When I left here, I felt like a lot of people were excited by the idea but that it was impossible.”

“I’ve taken myself beyond anything I’ve ever done physically and mentally, and I doubt I’ll ever do anything like that again,” he said.

The route went through Europe, Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, and North America.

Beaumont experienced sub-zero temperatures in the southern hemisphere and smog in North America from forest fires, the BBC noted. He fell twice and required emergency dental treatment from his back-up team.

He reported being very sore and said he wasn’t sure he could even walk up and down stairs right away because he hadn’t really walked since the beginning of July. He credited his back-up team as being a big part of his success, the BBC reported.

Twitter fans wished the cyclist well and congratulated him.
