Born in 1917, Lord moved from San Francisco to New York at age 15, and made her Broadway debut at 18 in a production of "The Old Maid," a Pulitzer Prize-winning adaptation of an Edith Wharton novel.
She soon appeared in two low-budget films both released in 1937, "Border Café" and "Forty Naughty Girls."
According to The New York Times, "She married the actor John Archer in 1941 and moved with him to Los Angeles, where she appeared in the James Cagney drama 'Johnny Come Lately' and 'Sherlock Holmes in Washington,' with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, both released in 1943. She also returned to Broadway, briefly, in 'Signature' (1945) and 'Little Brown Jug' (1946)."
Lord and Archer had two children together, including actress Anne Archer, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film "Fatal Attraction."
Lord divorced Archer in the 1950s, and later remarried producer and actor Randolph Hale. After his death in 1974, she married bank executive Harry J. Volk. He died in 2000.
Variety reported that, later in her life, Lord became focused on philanthropy, supporting USC, the Music Center, and founding the Scripter Award, which recognizes authors and screenwriters.
Lord is survived by her son and daughter, as well as five grandchildren.
