A rare Marilyn Monroe nude scene cut from the 1961 film "The Misfits" and believed to have been destroyed, has been found, Deadline reported Sunday.
In the scene, Monroe allows the bed-sheet to drop, exposing her naked body. This was one of the first nude scenes shot for a major studio movie but the director, John Huston, decided it was unnecessary to the story and chose to cut it.
In the film, Monroe plays a recently divorced, one-time stripper who finds herself in a complicated relationship with a down-on-his-luck cowboy, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
For all these years it was believed that the rare and historical scene had been destroyed, but an author writing about the private life of Monroe, learned of its existence recently while conducting research for his book, Deadline noted.
Charles Casill, who is writing "Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon," sat down to interview Curtice Taylor, the son of "The Misfits" producer, when it emerged that the footage had been kept safe in a locked cabinet since 1999, when Taylor's father died.
According to Taylor, the nude scene had not been written into the script but, as he pointed out, "why would a woman sitting up in bed, with nobody in the room, pull the sheet up and then try to put a blouse on at the same time? It makes no sense," The Daily Mail reported.
"So she just drops the sheet. I think it's one of the reasons she did this. There are quite a few takes of this scene," he said.
Taylor has not said what he intends to do with the footage yet.
