A Marilyn Monroe dress sold for $4.8 million at a Los Angeles auction, and the winner of the “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress was Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Marilyn Monroe’s skintight dress, which was designed by the Academy Award-winning costume designer Jean Louis, might be the “most iconic piece of pop culture that there is,” according to the vice president of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum chain, BBC News noted.

The dress containing 2,500 crystals was worn by Monroe at a 1962 gala at Madison Square Garden, which was also a fundraiser for the Democratic Party, and an early 45th birthday celebration for President John F. Kennedy, BBC noted.

At the Democratic fundraiser, Monroe walked out on the stage under a bright spotlight in front of 15,000 guests, a lot of whom were celebrities, the Art Fix Daily noted.

When she removed her white ermine fur coat, the skintight dress was revealed, sparking an immediate response from those in attendance. She then began singing “Happy Birthday Mr. President,” the Art Fix Daily noted.

“For all the things you’ve done. The battles that you’ve won. The way you deal with U.S. Steel and our problems by the ton. We thank you so much…Everybody! Happy Birthday!” Monroe sung.

“Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ is certainly one of the most famous impromptu performances in American history,” said Darren Julien, President and CEO of Julien’s Auctions, which is located in Beverly Hills, Reuters noted.

The iconic dress, which was so tight that it had to be sewn on Monroe at the last minute, “gave the impression she was nude,” which was consistent with her stature as one of the most famous sex symbols of the 20th century, Reuters noted.

The now $4.8 million dress holds the world record for the most expensive dress sold at an auction, exceeding the $4.6 million that was spent on Monroe’s white dress from the Seven Year Itch in 2011.

The same “Happy Birthday” dress was last purchased at an auction in 1999 for $1.3 million by business mogul Martin Zweig, BBC noted.

Monroe died three months after the performance from a drug overdose.
