In Manhattan, a piece of fire escape was knocked loose during a building inspection Friday and fell seven stories to the ground, seriously injuring two pedestrians who were on the street below.

The incident happened around 1:40 p.m. Friday at Broadway and Howard Streets in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, CBS New York reported. The injured pedestrians were taken to Bellevue Hospital with what FDNY officials called “serious, life-threatening injuries.”

A building inspector was on the fire escape inspecting the building’s façade when the step came loose under her. “She actually fell partially through the fire escape,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Michale Gala Jr. said, CBS New York reported. “Thankfully she was able to pull herself up.”

“It was a normal inspection under Local Law 11,” Gala said, the New York Post reported.

The inspector who was on the fire escape when the step fell off was checked by EMS and cleared. She refused further medical attention, the Post reported.

Witness Matthew Kohere saw one victim hit the ground.

“I was about 10 feet away, sitting in my van, and I just saw a guy hit the ground. Blood started pouring from his head. At first, I didn’t know what it was. Honestly, I thought someone had shot him in the head, that’s how bad it was,” he told the Post .

Passers-by were stunned by the incident.

“It’s crazy,” Hilary Stahlecker, 53, told the Post. “I can’t believe it, that you could be just walking down the street and something falls from the sky. It just goes to show you, it could happen to any of us.”

The Buildings Department and other city agencies are investigating the incident.
