A man stabbed 10 children outside a school in southern China on Monday before killing himself.
Two of the children were severely injured in the attack on six boys and four girls outside the gate of an elementary school in the city of Haikou, Reuters reported
. The children were taken to the hospital. None of the injuries was life-threatening.
People’s Daily China posted about the attack on Twitter.
Monday’s attack happened as students were lining up to go home after the morning session, Agence France-Presse reported
"I thought my child would be safe at school; I didn't think something like this would happen," the mother of a 7-year-old victim told reporters, according to AFP.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent attacks in recent years, The Independent reported, adding that the attacks
“were mostly carried out by disaffected perpetrators with mental illnesses.”
The attacker was identified as Li Sijun, 45, Fox News reported
Other stabbing incidents in China occurred in 2014, when three children and a teacher were stabbed to death; March 2013, when a man killed two relatives and injured 11 people near a school in Shanghai; and 2010, when a man killed eight children at a primary school in China's Fujian province.
