When a Wisconsin man found himself locked inside a beer cooler overnight at a Kwik Trip, he didn't sweat it — he just stayed until morning and helped himself to some beer.

Police arrested Jeremy Van Ert, 38, of Marshfield, Wisconsin, for retail theft after he reportedly spent the night in the Kwik Trip beer cooler, drank a beer and three malt beverages, then left without paying for them when the cooler was unlocked the next morning, according to WAOW.

“The subject found himself locked in the beer cooler, knew that Kwik Trip would not sell him any beer, so he decided to remain in the beer cooler,” Marshfield Police Chief Rick Gramza said, WAOW reported. “A customer came by the beer cooler at about 6 a.m. and saw him inside.”

According to the police report obtained by the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, employees would have let him out of the beer cooler if he had knocked on its glass door to let them know he was there.

Van Ert also knocked over a stack of cases of beer, damaging several, during his time in the cooler.

“This is unique, I’ve been here 20 years. I’ve heard of people being locked inside of buildings, never inside of a beer cooler,” Gramza said, WAOW reported.

Van Ert is being held in jail on a probation violation for the incident, because a condition of his probation on a previous case required him to stay sober, WAOW reported.

Kwik Trip management said they would be reviewing their security after the incident, WAOW reported.
