A 27-year old North Carolina man’s heart condition made him forget his wife was nine months pregnant and led to surgery while she was giving birth.

John Lancaster thought he just had a bad cold, but when he couldn’t breathe and went to the local hospital, he quickly ended up in a hospital in the next state in a medically induced coma for 18 days, WTKR reported.

When he regained consciousness at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, Lancaster didn’t remember his wife was nine months pregnant. She gave birth on Jan. 24 while he was in surgery to help his lungs function, WISTV reported.

Erica Lancaster had herself wheeled down the hall so her husband could hold his new daughter, she told WTKR.

Lancaster had a heart condition known as Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy (LVNC) that affected his lungs and caused the coughing he thought was a cold, WTKR reported. The condition also affected his memory and caused him to forget his wife’s pregnancy.

Lancaster had high praise for the Sentara doctors, known as the Nightingale Team, who did the procedure to install an Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) device to keep his lungs going.

“They are rock stars,” he told WTKR. “They saved my life and it means a lot.”

Lancaster says holding his daughter Kimber was “better than any medicine in the world,” WISTV reported. “They keep me wanting to push to get out and get better,” he said of his wife and daughter.

Kimber weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces, which is an interesting coincidence since her father works for 7-Eleven, WISTV reported.
