An Illinois man died in a 500-foot fall at the Grand Canyon after losing his footing after climbing over a rail at a viewpoint at the south rim of the national park, Fox News reported.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Andrey Privin from Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

Park visitors at the scene on July 3 reported seeing a young male "toss his backpack to his intended landing spot but did not realize that he was going to try to jump the gap," the National Parks Traveler noted.

However, these accounts have not been confirmed by officials.

Park spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski said that, "while the incident remains under investigation," it is most likely that "he removed his backpack for better dexterity."The tragic incident comes shortly after Privin completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing and days before he was set to begin his dream job at Highland Park Hospital.

"I've never wanted anything quite as much as I wanted to be a nurse," Privin said in a post to Facebook weeks before his death.

A spokeswoman for NorthShore University Health System said Privin had been working at the hospital as a patient care technician but was set to begin a new job there as a registered nurse, The Chicago Tribune noted.

"He was well-loved by his patients and coworkers, and enjoyed a reputation of always going above and beyond to make a significant impact on people’s lives," she said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Privin’s family cover funeral expenses, with more than $12,500 generated as of Tuesday morning.

While a beautiful place, the Grand Canyon is also known to be treacherous.

According to statistics released by the National Park Service, there were 290 search-and-rescue (SAR) incidents reported for the Grand Canyon last year alone.

Earlier this year a tragic helicopter crash there claimed five lives, including that of British newlyweds Eleanor Udall and Jonathan Udall, who were in the U.S. for their honeymoon.
