Man Bulldozes Home, Wife's Errands End in Empty Lot Shock Upon Return

A New York man bulldozed his home while his wife was away running errands and she didn't find out until she came home to an empty lot.

Diane Andryshak, the legal owner of the house in Middletown, said she came back to her nonexistent home Monday after her husband, James Rhein, allegedly rented an excavator and demolished the house without a permit, ABC 7 News reported.

“None of my belongings were taken out. Everything was in the house. I’m in shock,” Andryshak told the station. She said she and her husband hadn’t been fighting.

Rhein was arrested Monday while demolishing the house, charged with criminal mischief, and released on $300 bail.

He told NBC 4 New York the house was dilapidated, and he tried to get a permit to demolish it, but the office was closed Monday for the federal holiday.

Rhein added that he tried to call his wife to let her know his plans, but she didn’t pick up the phone.

Andryshak was distraught at first. "But now she's over it," Rhein told the station. "We're good. I'm a good husband, what can I tell you?"

Andryshak said she was staying with a friend.

Neighbor Steve Belfiglio described the situation to CBS New York: “He bulldozed all her clothes in there. Washer, dryer, furnace, hot water heater, everything was still in there. In fact, her medication was still in there.”

Twitter users seemed befuddled.
