Six authors are up for the Man Booker Prize that is scheduled to be awarded on Tuesday, according to the prize's website.

The books and authors who made the Man Booker Prize shortlist this year included "4 3 2 1" by Paul Auster; "History of Wolves," by Emily Fridlund; "Exit West" by Mohsin Hamid, "Elmet" by Fiona Mozley, "Lincoln in the Bardo" by George Saunders, and "Autumn" by Ali Smith.

Auster, Fridlund, and Saunders are authors from the United States. Mozley and Smith are from the United Kingdom, and the Man Booker Prize listed Hamid from Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

The Man Booker Prize, established in 1969, was created to promote quality fiction by recognizing the best novel annually written in English and published in the United Kingdom, according to the prize's website.

The Guardian wrote that Smith is outselling the U.S. writers on the shortlist as of Monday, but bookmakers made Saunders the favorite to win the prize.

"Autumn" appeared to be the commercial winner with nearly 50,000 copies sold, according book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan, The Guardian wrote. Auster comes in second with nearly 15,000 sales. All the other authors sold about 10,000 copies each, except for Fridlund, which sold about 3,410 copies, the newspaper stated.

The first American winner of the Man Booker Prize was Paul Beatty's book "The Sellout" last year, The Associated Press noted. Americans became eligible to compete for the prize in 2014, noted the news service.

Organizers told The AP that Americans made up about 30 percent of the 144 books submitted by publishers for consideration this year, slightly down from last year.

Judges for the award are picked from a wide range of disciplines, including critics, writers, and academics, along with poets, politicians, actors, and others "with a passion for quality fiction," the prize's website continued.

The authors who make the shortlist receive $3,295 and a designer-bound copy of their book with the winner taking the main prize of $65,905.
