The Obama women — Michelle Obama, Sasha, and Malia, along with Michelle Obama’s mother Marian Robinson — are visiting China and making the news as the world gets a look at how grown-up and fashionable President Barack Obama’s daughters are.
The family — without President Obama — are making a seven-day, three-city visit to China. As pictures were shared across the internet of Michelle Obama, Sasha, and Malia at the Great Wall, many comments online focused on changes in the girls since their father took office.

Us Weekly compared the girls to their elegant and stylish mother.
“The true star of the foreign photo op, however, was 15-year-old Malia – who resembled her stylish mom more than ever – in a high-waisted floral skirt and matching crop top from Topshop,”
Us Weekly wrote. “Unlike many teens wearing crop tops, Malia opted not to bare her midriff, by hiking up her skirt, while meeting the leader of China and his wife on Friday.”
Sasha, 12, also shares the family’s fashion sense, and she appeared in a photo op with Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, in a red dress with a white belt.
“How lovely do they all look? Malia is going to be tall!” wrote one commenter on the Us Weekly article.
This is the first time a
U.S. president’s wife traveled independently in China, the Daily Mail noted, and people in the country were impressed with her manner in meeting with people.
“She is very warm and frank, and when she is talking to people she conscientiously listens to what they have to say," Wu Qing, a retired professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University, told the Daily Mail.
Michelle Obama also took the opportunity to talk at Peking University about media freedom.
"My husband and I are on the receiving end of plenty of questioning and criticism from our media and our fellow citizens, and it’s not always easy, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world,"
she said, according to Time magazine. “It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the Internet ... because that's how we discover the truth.”
