Two-star Maj. Gen. Joseph Harrington has been suspended by the Army for sending suggestive messages to an enlisted soldier’s wife, USA Today reported Friday.

Harrington is the commander of U.S. forces in Africa and is based in Italy.

Harrington allegedly sent private Facebook messages such as “U can be my nurse” and “How often does your devil vixen come out?” to the woman between March and June, Stars and Stripes reported. She gave the messages to an advocacy groupm which made them available to media outlets.

Former Air Force judge and President of Protect Our Defenders Don Christensen said the messages violated Article 133 of military law, which is conduct unbecoming an officer, because of Harrington’s rank, marital status, and the woman’s status as the wife of one of his subordinates under his command, Stars and Stripes reported.

Christensen, who reviewed the messages, said that in some of them Harrington asked the woman to delete them, and that many were sent late at night, Stars and Stripes reported.

“There’s no way in hell this guy should be texting some junior enlisted’s wife in the middle of the night, and he knew it,” Christensen said. Harrington also called the woman frequently, including from the shower, Stars and Stripes reported.

The general is suspended “pending the completion of an investigation by the Army’s inspector general,” the Army’s chief of public affairs office said Friday.

Harrington has been an officer in the Army since 1987 and was considered a rising star. He served as executive officer to former Army Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey before Dempsey's retirement, Stars and Stripes reported.

“I look forward to the completion of the investigation,” Harrington said in a statement, USA Today reported.
