A mailman accused of dumping mail into the woods in suburban Atlanta is being investigated by the United States Postal Service after local residents reportedly caught the act on video.

One resident in a Decatur subdivision brought a video to WSB-TV that reportedly showed a postal carrier dumping mail into a wooded area. After going to the wooded area, the TV station contacted the postal service about the incident.

WSB-TV stated that postal service investigators filled at least a dozen bins of mail that had been dumped in the wooded area.

"You have business statements, bank statements, very important mail that people are looking for and probably waiting for," Kellie Campbell, who recorded the video, told WSB-TV. "I sat there and recorded for about five minutes. And he continued to just grab more mail and continued to just toss it over the fence."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that postal officials did not release the name of the accused mail carrier, who reportedly works part-time for USPS. While no charges have yet to be filed against the mail carrier, the newspaper stated that it is a federal offense to throw away someone's mail and the perpetrator could be fined.

"The Postal Service condemns, in the strongest possible sense, behavior that jeopardizes the security and sanctity of the U.S. Mail — or threatens to tarnish the reputation and high level of trust that the vast majority of our employees work so hard to uphold," the postal service told WSB-TV in a statement, according to the Journal-Constitution. "We are investigating this matter."

CNN reported that the mail service said it intends to deliver the discarded mail as soon as possible. In the meantime, some residents expressed their displeasure over the situation, according to WSB-TV.

"That's where my mail at, down in that hole down there in the woods," resident Johnnie Lanier told the station. "I think that was very disrespectful."
