A Mafia wife, who allegedly became "the Godmother" after once being accused of filling in for her jailed husband, was arrested Tuesday in a sting operation in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, Sky News reported.

Authorities think Maria Angela Di Trapini, 49, ran the Sicilian Mafia for husband Salvatore Madonia while he served a life sentence for the killing of Libero Grassi, an anti-Mafia entrepreneur, Sky News said.

Di Trapini was one of 25 suspected Mafia members arrested on a variety of charges, including extortion, handling stolen goods, vandalism and being mafia a member, according to Reuters. More than 200 police officers took part in the Tuesday morning crackdown.

Authorities believe, according to Sky News, that Di Trapini was the leader of the reshuffling of the Sicilian Mafia after the death of Toto Riina. Police said wiretaps allegedly confirmed that Di Trapini worked her way up to boss over the past two years and was planning with other groups to restart the Cosa Nostra crime organization.

Di Trapini had served as seven-year stint in prison before that time for giving orders to the Madonia clan through her jailed husband.

"While Cosa Nostra has been much weakened by the result of judicial investigations, this case shows the continuing ability to use violence, intimidation, and the mafia code to force business and shop owners to pay extortion," a warrant in the arrest read, according to Reuters.

Police said it has documented 33 separate crimes and 22 attempts to extort shops and businesses to benefit the Mafia over its two-year investigation.

Di Trapini's alleged rise to power came after the death of Riina, nicknamed "The Beast" while leading Cosa Nostra because of his ruthless cruelty, Sky News reported.

One suspected Mafia member referred to Di Trapini as the "the mistress of the house" while an informant told investigators "for all intents and purposes, she acts like a real man," Sky News quoted court filings.
