Madeline Connelly, a Chicago area woman missing since May 4 after going hiking in Montana, was found alive with her dog on Wednesday and reunited with her family.

Connelly, 23, had been missing six days before rescuers located her about five miles from where her car was parked, reported the Chicago Tribune. She began the hike in the Great Bear Wilderness near Glacier National Park, reported KPAX-TV.

Authorities said Connelly wanted to hike back out but was airlifted to a hospital. She was treated and released from Kalispell Regional Medical Center before returning home.

Connelly said she was visiting relatives near the park and decided to take a quick hike before continuing on her drive for a bakery job in Alaska, said the Tribune.

"The first night I realized I was not in the right place, but I thought if I kept going I would be on the same loop of a trail and I would just get out," Connelly said, per WBBM-TV. "Then I ended up on a lake and I was like, 'This is not right.'"

Connelly said she found herself in steep terrain as weather conditions deteriorated, but she tried to keep going every day. She said she drank water out of creeks and streams, but did not have much to eat.

"She's a very fortunate young lady," Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry told the Tribune, adding that 40 to 50 searchers looked for Connelly over the wooded area. He said helicopters were also used in the search.

The Great Bear Wilderness, which is located south of Glacier National Park, has more than 300 miles of trails and wildlife that includes wolverine, deer, elk, moose, grizzly bears, black bears, mountain goats and mountain sheep.

"I can't believe we were able to get out my dog and I," Connelly said, per the Tribune. "I just kinda wanted to say thank you to everyone who put in all of this effort and helping me."
