Mackenzie Moretter: Mom's Facebook Plea Draws Hundreds to Bday Party

Mackenzie Moretter is now a local celebrity in her Minnesota hometown after her mom's Facebook plea for someone to show up to the 10-year-old girl's birthday party went viral, with hundreds of people ultimately attending the Saturday celebration.

Moretter, from Shapokee, Minnesota, has Sotos syndrome, a genetic disorder that triggers developmental delays that make it hard for her to socialize, according to BuzzFeed.

Her parents, Matt and Jenny Moretter, told the news site they were "heartbroken" when all 10 girls their daughter invited to her birthday party declined the invitation.

"She's never really had any friends," Matt Moretter told BuzzFeed. "No one has ever really come over to play. She's just kind of played with her brother and sister's friends."

In a last ditch effort to get people to show up to her daughter's party, Jenny Moretter posted a plea to Facebook Friday asking parents if their kids would like to attend the party.

"She is incredibly loving and wants more than anything to have friends," she wrote. "As a mother, it is heartbreaking."

The message quickly went viral from circle to circle and, before Jenny Moretter knew it, she was fielding media requests and planning for a crowd of nearly 600.

Attendees included Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Charles Johnson and his family along and Shapokee Mayor Brad Tabke, who issued a proclamation of "Mackenzie Moretter Day" in the city, according to KARE-TV.

"I have a hard time making friends in school, but thanks to all of you . . . my voice was heard," the 10-year-old birthday girl told her party guests on Saturday. "I love you all."

The Moretter family told the media they were stunned by such an overwhelming response in such a short period of time.

"It was amazing," Matt Moretter told BuzzFeed. "There were so many people who had similar stories to ours that we got to meet."

Mackenzie received "Happy Birthday" Facebook messages from around the world, as far away as Australia.
