Monday, 20 August 2012 09:27 AM EDT

Rep. Connie Mack trails Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson by seven points in Florida’s U.S. Senate race, according to the latest Rasmussen poll.

In a telephone survey, Nelson received 47 percent support to Mack’s 40 percent.

Mack, who will address the Republican National Convention next week, cruised to victory in the Republican Senate primary, winning nearly 60 percent of the vote. His father, Connie Mack III, was a U.S. senator and his great-grandfather is in the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

Nelson is a second-term Democrat with a nearly $9 million campaign account.
