Lunch-Shamed: Cookies Earn Girl's Mom a Stern Letter From School

A Colorado mom said she was “lunch-shamed” after sending Oreo cookies in her daughter’s lunch.

Leeza Pearson, of Aurora, told ABC News she was shocked when her daughter returned home with the cookies and a sharp note that read, "Dear Parents, it is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. This is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable and a healthy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone's participation."

Pearson’s daughter, Natalee, 4, has been given cookies and candy as part of school events, Pearson told ABC.

"I think it is definitely over the top, especially because they told her she can't eat what is in her lunch," Pearson told ABC News. "They should have at least allowed to eat her food and contacted me to explain the policy and tell me not to pack them again."

The little girl attends Children’s Academy, which receives funding from the Aurora public school system. A spokesperson for the school said the incident is being looked into because the note sent home in a child’s lunchbox was not standard.

"From our end we want to inform parents but never want it to be anything punitive," the spokesperson told ABC, adding that the school wanted to promote healthy eating. The spokesperson also told the Aurora Sentinel that Natalee was given a healthy alternative to the cookies.

Pearson told USA Today, “What the school thinks is healthy for her is not what I think is healthy for her. She needs to eat what she's going to eat. That's between me and her and our doctor — not the school."

People online were horrified the child was denied the food her mother sent:
