Lucille Ball Statue, Called 'Scary Lucy,' to Be Fixed by New Artist

A New York village will have a statue of Lucille Ball that has been dubbed “Scary Lucy” fixed.

Scott Schrecengost, mayor of Celoron, told The Associated Press he has spoken with a sculptor who has agreed to fix the life-sized statue of the actress that has stood in her home town since 2009 and drawn worldwide criticism, The Associated Press reported.

The original sculptor, Dave Poulin, originally offered to fix the statue for $8,000 to $10,000 and later said he would do the work at no charge. But Schrecengost declined the offer, the AP said.

A campaign to replace the statue began on Facebook in 2012.

Poulin said he has gotten hundreds of angry messages and death threats related to the sculpture, which he admits is "by far my most unsettling sculpture."

"I take full responsibility for 'Scary Lucy,' though by no means was that my intent or did I wish to disparage in any way the memories of the iconic Lucy image," Poulin told The Hollywood Reporter in a letter.

Poulin said he is heartsick about the reaction.

“I’m ready to move on,” Schrecengost said, according to the Buffalo News.

He said the village will seek donations to replace the sculpture, and village trustee Dick Kogut has said he will donate the next six months of his village paycheck to the project.

The statue, which has been compared to Chucky the killer doll and an extra from “The Walking Dead,” has drawn a stream of visitors to take pictures next to the statue.

Twitter users shared mixed reactions.
