Police believe the remains of Lucas Hernandez, a 5-year-old Wichita, Kansas, boy missing for more than three months have been found.
Emily Glass, the boy’s stepmother, led private investigator David Marshburn to a body located under a bridge in Harvey County Thursday, according to KWCH 12 News.
When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they found Glass, Marshburn, and the remains of a small child.
The district attorney released a statement Friday.
“As has been widely reported, human remains were discovered last evening in Southern Harvey County,” the statement said, KWCH 12 reported. “Early next week, the Office of the District Attorney will review the results of the autopsy currently being conducted as well as evidence gathered by law enforcement throughout this investigation.”
Glass, who initially reported the boy missing, was booked into jail on suspicion of interfering with a law enforcement officer and obstruction.
“Child death cases are very difficult on family, police authorities, and the community,” Police Chief Gordon Ramsay told reporters. “Our thoughts and prayers continue for everyone involved.”
Approximately six weeks ago, Kansas Search Investigation, an independent search group, discovered nothing when its members thoroughly searched the area near where the remains were found, according to its leader Misty Cox, The Wichita Eagle reported.
“I’m glad that he has been recovered and that his family can finally get closure,” Cox said.
