A Louisiana trooper mailed a lost wallet back to its owner in an act of kindness that has since drawn widespread attention.

A Reddit user identified as Wardo613 posted about his ordeal, explaining how he had lost his wallet while visiting Mardi Gras in New Orleans but had got it back in the mail from a state trooper who had paid from his own pocket to have it safely returned, WDSU reported.

Enclosed with the wallet was a note from the trooper, John Jett, who wrote that he had initially planned to hand it over to lost and found at the New Orleans Police Department, "however, they really did not have one set up…I decided to mail it to you," The Daily Advertiser noted.

Jett added that he had gone through the wallet, but only to confirm the owner's address.

"Everything in your wallet is exactly as it was when I found it," he said, per WDSU.

Wardo613 confirmed that nothing was missing when he received his wallet and, at the suggestion of others, said he would buy the entire department pizza as a token of appreciation.

The story was shared widely across social media platforms and drew praise from the public, who applauded Jett for his honesty.

"The level of integrity and compassion displayed by this Trooper is something to be proud of," one person wrote on Twitter.

"So proud of our Louisiana State Police. Trooper Jett, sir you are an honorable man," another person said on Facebook.
