Lou Anna Simon, Michigan State University president, resigned Wednesday just hours after former university doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexual assault.

There had been calls for Simon to resign in quake of the Nassar scandal, the Lansing State Journal reported. Nassar, the former team physician for USA Gymnastics, the Olympic governing body for the sport in America, stood accused of assaulting more than 100 girls under the guise of treatment.

Some of the victims included former Michigan State student-athletes who questioned why the university failed the stop Nassar's alleged behavior, CBS Sports reported.

"To the survivors, I can never say enough that I am so sorry that a trusted, renowned physician was really such an evil, evil person who inflicted such harm under the guise of medical treatment," Simon said in her resignation letter released by MSU. "I know that we all share the same resolve to do whatever it takes to avert such tragedies here and elsewhere.”

"… As tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable. As president, it is only natural that I am the focus of this anger. … Therefore, I am tendering my resignation as president according to the terms of my employment agreement."

Brian Breslin, chair of the university's board of trustees, issued a statement saying that it will accept Simon's resignation and that it was time for a change, per the State Journal.

"President Simon has served with distinction as MSU's president for 13 years and has been a constant presence at the university for more than 40 years," Breslin said. "… We greatly appreciate her integrity, her many contributions, and her willingness to continue to serve through transition."

The Detroit News reported that journalist and author John U. Bacon, though, called Simon's letter "clueless to the end" and said she "has no idea how incriminating her statement is."
