In South Los Angeles, an armed male driver was shot dead by police after the vehicle collided with two other vehicles Monday night, KTLA-TV reported.

The incident involving an erratically driven vehicle started about 6 p.m. in the city's Florence neighborhood, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Meghan Aguilar told the television station.

The vehicle hit two other vehicles after traveling eastbound on Florence, police said, according to KTLA-TV. The vehicle reportedly continued eastbound and then hit a light pole.

"There was a sole individual in the vehicle who was armed with a firearm, and at which time there was an officer-involved shooting," Aguilar told KTLA-TV. The person was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene, police told the television station, adding that a weapon was recovered at the scene.

KTLA-TV wrote that it was not clear what led to officers firing on the driver, and police said the case was under investigation.

"What drew their attention first to that suspect vehicle, and they’ll have to go into detail about that," Agular told the television station. "And they’ll ask them exactly what they saw and when they saw it with that individual; where he was, what he was doing, where the firearm was, was it pointed at them?"

The suspect was between 20 and 30 years old and was the only occupant in the car, Aguilar told reporters, according to KABC-TV. Two officers fired on the driver, police added.

Authorities told KABC-TV that they want to interview witnesses of the incident. Police said the Crown Victoria did not have a dash cam and the involved officers were not equipped with body cameras, the television station reported.

Los Angeles Police said that none of its officers were injured in the incident, KTLA-TV reported. Authorities said the occupants of the other vehicles involved in the initial collisions suffered minor injuries or complained of pain, but no one was transported to a hospital, the television station added.
