Los Angeles Rogue Horse Starts Riding Center Stampede; 6 Injured

By    |   Monday, 30 December 2013 11:11 AM EST

Six people were injured over the weekend at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center when a rogue horse got loose and triggered a stampede.

According to Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn, the rogue horse ran off to one of the center's back trails around 11:45 a.m. Saturday and struck a group of other horses, which began bucking their riders.

"I saw my kids fall off the horses, being dragged, my 6-year-old twins," a woman named Megan told NBC Los Angeles. "It was like pinballs. The horse just kept going. All of the horses started running and throwing riders off."

"About 15 horses came running towards me on my left, and a few of them didn't have riders so I knew we were really in trouble," rider Marian Hermansea said.

Some witnesses said the rogue horse initially got loose because it was spooked by a tractor that backfired, according to ABC7.com.

"The [horses] were coming every which direction, and they were telling us pull back on the horse, but the horses were just going up in the air and everybody starting falling, and I fell," a rider named Vickie told ABC7.com. "All of a sudden I'm on the ground, I'm trying to curl in a ball because I didn't know if the horses were going to go over top of me."

Three adults and three minors sustained minor injuries in the scuffle. Five victims were taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and one was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, officials said. All were expected to make full recoveries.

Police said the horses were eventually contained.
