Eva Longoria to Speak at Democratic National Convention

By    |   Wednesday, 22 August 2012 12:27 PM EDT

The Democratic National Convention Committee has named actress Eva Longoria as one of the individuals who will speak at the Party's upcoming convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Longoria, the first Hollywood celebrity to be announced, is scheduled to address Democratic delegates.

The television and film actress is among a slate of female speakers who will reportedly use the Democratic National Convention to focus on women’s issues, with a likely emphasis on the Democrat’s repetitive underlying theme that the GOP has been waging a “war on women.”

Along with Longoria, the names of other speakers that have been announced include Caroline Kennedy, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Georgetown student Sandra Fluke, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan, and Lilly Ledbetter, the woman for whom President Barack Obama's pay equity law was named.

Longoria has been a key fundraising bundler for Obama and has worked on Hispanic and women’s outreach for his re-election effort. She is also a national co-chair of Obama's current campaign and has been a harsh critic of Arizona's SB 1070 immigration law.

The actress is best known for portraying Gabrielle Solis on the now cancelled ABC television series “Desperate Housewives,” a role that in 2006 garnered her a Golden Globe Award.
