Long Lashes Bad for Eyes, Say Ophthalmologists

Long lashes are bad for the eyes, suggests a new scientific study presented recently at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology.

"Long lashes catch the air and guide it to the eye surface. They act as a channel," said the study’s lead author Guillermo Amador, a researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Today.com reported on Friday.

In the first part of the two-stage study, Amador and his team pulled out their calipers and measuring tape to examine eyeballs across the animal kingdom — from aardvark to zebra.

They found that, by-and-large, animals — humans included — were sporting lashes whose length were roughly one-third the diameter of their eyeballs.

Using that as a baseline, the scientists then constructed an experiment in a wind tunnel.

Using model eyeballs featuring lashes of varying lengths, the researchers found that those sticking closest to the one-third ratio produced a wind-block directly in front of the eye. Eyelashes straying too far away from the ratio did not produce the same, or in some cases any, zone of stagnant air to protect the peepers. Jarringly, they found that longer lashes often exacerbated dry eye by funneling the zephyrs straight onto the cornea.

Dr. Deepinder Dhaliwal, an associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said that artificial lashes were clearly the worst offenders, but said lash-lengthening mascara often disturbed the airflow around the eye too.

"This is a very interesting study because it talks about optimal eyelash length and shows that beyond that, the eye actually has more airflow onto the eyeball, and possibly along with that contact with dust or other particles," he said.

Other ophthalmologists were less worried about dry eye than they were the damaging effects of the glue used to attach false eyelashes.

"It has high levels of formaldehyde and benzoic acid, both of which are harmful to the cornea. On top of that, as the eyelashes grow out, the extensions tend to point towards the cornea and you can get corneal abrasions," said Dr. Rosalind Vo, a corneal surgeon at the Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.
