"The Lone Ranger," Johnny Depp's new film billed as the West's version of "Pirates of the Caribbean," is being slammed by critics who say the movie is a "train wreck" trifecta of bad acting, poor visual effects, and no plot line.
In the first revival of the title character in 32 years, "The Lone Ranger" tells the story of American Indian spirit warrior Tonto (Depp) who works together with John Reid (Armie Hammer) to fight greed and corruption in the Wild West.

The movie was supposed to be a summer box office smash, but almost every review has ripped it apart.
Here are some of the highlights, or lowlights, from critics' "The Lone Ranger" reviews:
"Floated conceptually and commercially by another eccentric comic characterization by Johnny Depp, this attempt by [director Gore] Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to plant the flag for another 'Pirates of the Caribbean'-scaled series tries to have it too many ways tonally, resulting in a work that wobbles and thrashes all over the place as it attempts to find the right groove."
"Let's be clear: this is a terrible film by any standards. Overlong, with a script that reads like a notes session no one ever organized into something coherent, and totally confused about what audience it supposedly plays to, 'The Lone Ranger' is grim, ugly, and deeply unpleasant. One thing it fails to be, in any way, is fun, and considering who is involved behind the camera and in front of it, that is truly shocking."
"'The Lone Ranger' is a movie for the whole family ... to avoid. It represents 2 1/2 of the longest hours on record, a jumbled botch that is so confused in its purpose and so charmless in its effect that it must be seen to be believed, but better yet, no. Don't see it, don't believe it, not unless a case of restless leg syndrome sounds like a fun time at the movies."
"Some films are for everyone. This film is for just about no one. Everything that could go wrong with this movie does go wrong. ... This is slick trash. A bloated, unfunny, sometimes downright bizarre train wreck featuring some of the loudest, longest, and least entertaining actual train wrecks in recent memory."
