Muslim Imams and clerics all over London, more than 130 in all, have refused to perform traditional Islamic funerals for the three attackers who killed seven and wounded dozens on London Bridge.
“Their acts and willful dismissal of our religious principles alienates [sic] them from any association with our community for whom the inviolability of every human life is the founding principle,” the Muslim Council of Britain said in a statement reported by USA Today. “Consequently, and in light of other such ethical principles which are quintessential to Islam, we will not perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer for the perpetrators.”
The group also encouraged other Imams and religious leaders not to perform the rites, telling them that the “indefensible actions are completely at odds with the lofty teachings of Islam” and calling them “vile murderers” who want to divide Britain and cause fear, USA today reported.
“We implore everyone to unite: we are one community,” the statement continued. “In the face of such dastardly cowardice, unlike the terrorists, we must uphold love and compassion.”
The attack on Saturday occurred when a van drove into pedestrians on London Bridge, then continued to nearby Borough Market, where three attackers stabbed multiple passersby. The three attackers were then shot by police who arrived on the scene, Fox News reported.
The funeral ritual is usually performed for a deceased Muslim no matter what the person did in the past, so this move is unprecendented for Imams.
Seems like most Twitter users felt the Imams’ actions were quite appropriate.
