A series of London acid attacks and a subsequent investigation has led to Metropolitan Police arresting two teenagers Thursday night in connection with the incidents.

The suspects, ages 16 and 15, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery, The Guardian reported. Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick called the incidents "completely barbaric" in an interview Friday morning.

"The acid can cause horrendous injuries," Dick told Leading Britain's Conversation, LBC talk radio. "Acid attacks are completely barbaric. It's a new trend in this country."

Five people were attacked in a 90-minute span, with one sustaining what is being described as "life-changing injuries," according to Sky News.

"These are hideous offenses and must have been very frightening for all of the victims," Chief Inspector Ben Clark, from Hackney Borough, told Sky News. "Of late we have seen more attacks using corrosive substances in London. I would urge businesses and parents to challenge those who they think may be trying to obtain or carry these substances as this could help prevent serious offences and life changing injuries being caused."

Delivery services Deliveroo and UberEATS confirmed to the BBC News that two of the victims were couriers working for them.

The first attack occurred at 10:25 p.m. local time when the suspects allegedly tossed a "corrosive substance" on a 32-year-old man riding a moped in Hackney Road junction, reported Sky News. One of the attackers then allegedly stole the victim's moped and drove away.

A 44-year-old man was attacked from 20 minutes later when he was sprayed with a substance  on Upper Street junction while a third man, a 24-year-old had acid thrown into his face at 11:05 p.m., authorities told Sky News.

Another man had a corrosive liquid thrown at him 15 minutes later, causing "life-changing" facial injuries while the fifth person, a 33-year-old man, was attacked while he sat on his moped on Chatsworth Road, Sky News continued.
