Lindsey Graham: Caitlyn Jenner Is 'Welcome' in Republican Party

Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina senator and Republican presidential candidate, said over the weekend that Caitlyn Jenner is “welcome” in his party.

Jenner, formerly known as the Olympic medalist and “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star Bruce Jenner, debuted her female identity on the cover of Vanity Fair last week.

“I haven't walked in her shoes,” Graham said in an interview with CNN. “I don't have all the answers to the mysteries of life. I can only imagine the torment that Bruce Jenner went through. I hope he's — I hope she has found peace.”

While open to expanding the GOP party tent, Graham remained firm in his opposition to abortion and support of traditional marriage, though he admitted to holding onto his position “without animosity."

In April when Bruce Jenner came out as a transgender (and was still using male pronouns), he also announced he was a Republican in the ABC special interview.

“I'm a pro-life, traditional marriage kind of guy, but I'm running to be president of the United States,” Graham told CNN. “If Caitlyn Jenner wants to be a Republican, she is welcome in my party.”

Graham is not the only one in the right wing who has voiced his thoughts on Jenner.

According to The Washington Post, radio show host Rush Limbaugh spoke first, advising Republicans to reject Caitlyn Jenner, even if she is a conservative.

Additionally, former senator and 2016 presidential candidate Rick Santorum initially told reporters, “If [Jenner] says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman.” Later, however, after outrage erupted, Santorum clarified, saying he wanted to “express empathy not a change in public policy.”

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, another 2016 GOP presidential contender, said in a recorded speech, “I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in P.E.”

While Graham is “into addition” in terms of growing the GOP, his main focus is combating radical Islam, he said in the interview.

“Here's what I would say to the talk show hosts: In the eyes of radical Islam, they hate you as much as they hate Caitlyn Jenner,” Graham said. “They hate us all because we won't agree to their view of religion. So America, we are all in this together.”
