Whether it was for shock value or to get more people listening to his song, rapper Lil Wayne's stomping on the American flag during a video shoot has sparked widespread backlash.

Lil Wayne was shooting his upcoming music video "God Bless Amerika" in his hometown, New Orleans. A bystander recorded a clip of the rapper stepping on the American flag during the shooting and uploaded it to YouTube, where it has gone viral, according to TMZ.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., began performing the song, and an American flag behind him fell to the ground. Lil Wayne continued to rap, stepping all over the flag during the recording.

TMZ reported some of the song's lyrics are: "My country 'tis of thee / Sweet land of kill 'em all and let 'em die / God bless Amerika / This ole' godless Amerika."

Reactions on Twitter were mostly negative.

"Freedom of speech, but desecrating the flag??? Not Cool-Lil Wayne Stomps On American Flag," user Jessica Bice tweeted.

"Lil Wayne is as free to stomp on the Flag as I am to tell you what disgusting waste of space he is," Joe Pags Pagliarulo wrote.

"Anyone still wanna argue that Lil' Wayne is the greatest or that he is even a good rapper? Dude is straight trash," Jon Kendall added.

Once called the "best rapper alive" by Time magazine in 2008, Lil Wayne has had his share of run-ins with law enforcement as well as success in the entertainment field.

He surpassed Elvis Presley last year as Billboard's top male artist, with 109 songs hitting the Billboard Hot 100.

Lil Wayne has been arrested and thrown in jail a number of times. In 2010, he served eight months of a one-year sentence at Rikers Island Prison in New York for attempted gun possession, MTV reported.
